The Taíno (Taína – in feminine form) are the indigenous people who lived throughout the Caribbean before the European conquests. The name Taína Mia (My Taína) is honoring our heritage of individuality and voice that the people of Puerto Rico still carry within them and are held in the values of this organization by working with the land to find balance and respect.
The mission of TaínaMia, Aguada’s Sustainable Disaster Relief Organization is to aid and support the community of Aguada and neighboring municipalities in northwest Puerto Rico. Our vision is to prepare the local community to know and understand their individual needs to be ready, self reliant, and live sustainably in general, and particularly in case of a natural disaster. TaínaMia will further this mission and vision via three main pillars: community empowerment, education, and emergency relief.
Community Empowerment: TaínaMia will serve as a force for building bonds within the community, by hosting or sponsoring events and services that bring the local community together to meet one another, learn from one another, and share abilities or resources, and by conducting outreach in the community to provide resources for becoming self-sustainable in the wake of a natural disaster—such as drought, earthquake, tsunami, or hurricane.
Education: TaínaMia will serve as a resource to help the local community learn about sustainable and self-reliant living and emergency preparedness by hosting, sponsoring, or providing classes or other educational events. Focus will be on education geared towards a self-reliant future for northwest Puerto Rico.
Emergency Relief: Taína Mia will also serve as a conduit for providing emergency relief and aid to Aguada and neighboring communities in the wake of natural disasters by making sure that local government agencies are in connection with TaínaMia to receive and distribute life sustaining relief, and by offering a secure self-sustaining location at Earthship Puerto Rico where people can access resources such as electricity and water.
TaínaMia is committed to the inclusion and recognition of all people in Aguada and neighboring communities of northwest Puerto Rico, regardless of race, age, culture, ability, ethnicity or nationality, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, marital status, religious affiliation, and socioeconomic status.
